10 Tips for Hiring a Graphic Designer for Long Term

How many times have you needed to hire someone to design your next website, t-shirt, logo, or just about anything else that requires some graphic design work? If you’re like most people, the answer to that question is too many times to count. The problem with hiring graphic designers, though, is that there are so many of them available who do such a wide variety of services and at all different price points, it can be very difficult to find the right one for your needs. Read on for 10 tips on how to find and hire the right graphic designer for your needs.

1) Research designers

Choosing a designer is not as simple as uploading your files and choosing from a dropdown menu. There are many factors to consider, which may help or hinder your success.
You should know how each company works and what they offer, or can offer with their existing resources. Once you have an idea of what is available, it's important to research where you will be best able to collaborate with your designer on the development of your project.

upenkumar

Upenkumar is a graphic designer with over 15 years of experience. He has worked on almost every type of design, including catalogs, brochures, posters, book covers, book page layouts, packaging, logos, t-shirt graphics, and stationary for printing, packaging, garments, publishers, schools, ad. agencies, and press. He is up-to-date with the latest software and printing techniques.

2) Consider design style

When hiring a graphic designer, keep in mind
that their design style will greatly influence your company's branding.
A good rule of thumb is to hire someone whose aesthetic matches your company's identity and brand. This can be tricky though! Brands are often complicated and difficult to pin down in such a short period of time.
Be honest with your designer when asked what you're looking for and this will make it easier for them to craft something truly special.

4) Search three designers and interview them

1. What's your hourly rate?

2. How much do you charge to create a logo?

3. When can you start designing my new logo?

4. What are your best and worst qualities in your opinion?

5. Where do you go to find inspiration?

6. Do you have any clients with similar businesses to mine?

7. Would I be able to see some of your portfolios before hiring you?

5) Ask questions after the interview

1. What software do you work with?

2. Have you ever worked on any large-scale projects?

3. Do you have any past work samples I can see before making a decision?

6) Prioritize your requirements

1. Budget - You should set your budget from the beginning and stick to it. If you don't know what designers cost, ask around or do some research online. If you find one who is not within your budget, it may be worth raising your budget or finding someone else who better fits what you're looking for in terms of price and design style. Remember: good design doesn't come cheap!

2. Skill Level and Speed - When starting out as a business owner, you want to make sure that the person you hire can deliver on time with consistency, so if he/she isn't fast and consistent yet, he/she will need to get there before accepting their offer

7) Identify a budget range

We can identify your budget range by talking about how much you're willing to spend and how long you need to keep the project running. If we were to start this process with your current budget, $2,000, here are some of the things I would consider:

-What type of work are you looking for?

-How will it be used?

-How much are other companies charging in your geographic area?

Based on what I've heard from others who have been in similar situations like yours and based on research, I would estimate that if you have time constraints (such as if this is for a website that needs to go live within a few months), then most experts in this area charge between $10-$20 per hour.

8) Shortlist two candidates

One of the best places to find your new graphic designer is online(Fiverr). If you're on LinkedIn, you can find profile designers by keyword search. Another resource is Twitter; like LinkedIn, there are plenty of people looking for freelance jobs in design and they advertise their skills.

To narrow down the number of possible candidates, here are some questions to ask your top three prospects:

What is your work style? Do you have any examples of your work that I can see? How many hours do you think this project will take (roughly)? What sort of revisions do we need to agree on up front? Will my logo be delivered digitally or in print form? Is this an ongoing job or just one-time work? What time zone will we be working in?

9) Schedule interviews with shortlisted candidates

Now that you have shortlisted your potential candidates, it's time to schedule interviews with each of them. Interviews are meant to be conducted in person, if possible, and they should be scheduled at least one week in advance to ensure there is enough time to review their portfolio beforehand. This may seem like an unimportant step,
but most designers will prefer being told what position they are applying for before the interview so that they can research and prepare adequately beforehand. It is also best to schedule appointments with all candidates on the same day so that they're not competing against each other, and if possible arrange these interviews close together so as not to tire yourself out throughout the day.

10) Decide who to hire (and why!)

1. What is your budget?

3. Do you have other design needs or just graphic design needs?

4. What is your favorite color scheme or style?

5. What format are you looking for? Print, Web, E-book Cover?
